Gay & Lesbian Community Fellowship
|
Background
For many years, religious institutions have used certain Bible passages out of context in order to condemn homosexuality. As a result, gay men, lesbians and other sexual minorities are made to feel marginalized and unwelcome in places of worship.
We strive to be a welcoming and affirming place for all, and to heal some of the discord between these communities and religious groups.
A Safe Space
At Christ Church, we endeavor to provide a welcoming environment for gay men, lesbians, bisexual and transgender individuals and their friends to meet, socialize, and find support.
Realizing that it is difficult for members of these communities to find one another outside of the sometimes destructive bar scene, we have opened our doors to create a Safe Space for conversation, information sharing and affirmation.
The Details
The Gay, Lesbian & Friends Community Fellowship meets for a variety of social events.
Although the meeting takes place at a church, it is not a religious organization per se, and people of any faith, or non-religious, are welcomed. The group also participates in a regional bowling league, which meets weekly on Tuesday nights during the school year.
Several times during the year, the group will meet to attend a cultural or social event at another location. In the past these have included the annual Pride Parade in New York City, and movies and plays with related themes at area theaters.
Members or potential members are encouraged to suggest possible events for the group to attend or plan.
How Can I Help?
The best thing you can do to help this ministry is share the news that it exists! Please tell the gay men, lesbians, and bisexual or transgender people in your congregation, workplace or community that they are welcome in our midst. Many of these individuals lack the resources to learn about outlets of this type.
We will be happy to provide brochures, posters or other information. Please contact us for details.
